Program Director

Urban Stable is currently looking for a Program Director to join our dedicated and dynamic team. We are looking for a passionate, energetic, and reliable individual to oversee the delivery of our program from connecting with program partners, organizing staff and volunteers, coaching the youth in our programs, to assisting in researching and pursuing funding streams.

Urban Stable, founded in 2001, is a registered charity in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is an accredited Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) Centre. Urban Stable empowers youth to engage in their education and community and achieve personal success through hands-on learning experiences with horses. We partner with local school divisions and community partners to provide equine experiential learning and riding programs to youth in grades 5-8, who are facing barriers and adversity, assisting them to develop vital life skills such as confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness. Our programs are proven to increase student attendance and engagement at school and in the community.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Conducts student registration (e.g., meetings at schools/ agencies, registration and referral of students, initial interviews with students/school contacts, conducts parent information sessions)
  • Develops program schedule (e.g., forms classes, student schedules, driver schedule)
  • Provides input into lesson plans
  • Implements lesson plans/teaches 1-2 classes/week
  • Monitors student progress and adjusts plans
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the schools (e.g., absences, incidents)
  • Prepares student progress reports (mid-year and end of year) and shares with schools/agencies/parents
  • Coordinates program wrap-up event (student showcase)
  • Maintains student files
  • Evaluates program (i.e., feedback forms – parents, students, schools; trend analysis) and makes adjustments as required
  • Recruits and schedules instructors, drivers, and volunteers
  • Maintains/updates website and social media
  • Coordinates staff and volunteers to assist at events
  • Responds to mail/email/phone calls
  • Researches and pursues funding streams (i.e., sponsorship, donor opportunities) in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Reports to Executive Director 

Key Requirements:  

  • Horse and coaching experience and knowledge equivalent to that of a coaching certification such as Equestrian Canada English or Western Instructor of Beginners or CanTRA Intermediate Instructor. Alternate coaching/ instructor certification and/ or equivalent horse and coaching experience that allows you to coach groups of four students independently such as: Pony Club of Canada HA or A level, PATH International, and British Horse Society etc. will also be considered  
  • Be willing to register and become certified with CanTRA
  • Be open to direction, instruction, and to follow the CanTRA safety guidelines and policies 
  • At least 100 hours coaching experience in both beginner private and group lessons would be preferred 
  • Experience working with youth and/or youth struggling with challenges is preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, with attention to detail, an ability to maintain records, prepare reports and compose correspondence related to the work
  • Fundraising and donor acquisition experience preferred. Ability to assist Executive Director with seeking out and pursuing funding
  • Ability to utilize verbal and visual storytelling and build community and engagement
  • Supervisory experience preferred with an ability to work with and lead diverse groups of people
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Able to be diplomatic, adaptable and build collaborative relationships
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Must have own reliable transportation  
  • Must sign all Urban Stable waivers and agree to abide by all Urban Stable policies 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Social Work/Education or related field or equivalent education and work experience would be an asset
  • Need to have weekday daytime and Saturday availability  
  • Need to be available up to 4 days a week for 32 hours a week

Three-month probationary period in effect working with and instructing alongside the Head Instructor and the Executive Director.

The Program Director will have routine performance evaluations with the Executive Director.

All positions are subject to a criminal record check and a child abuse registry check.

Training and mentoring will be provided to all approved candidates.
